In an Unexpected Direction

A four-week Argentine Tango workshop series at La Milonguita

The DJ starts the tanda.

Almost immediately, cabeceos and miradas begin to travel across the room.

You find a partner.

You take the floor.

You begin walking.

She speeds up.

So you speed up too.

You slow down.

She keeps going.

You stop.

She keeps moving.

You try something else.

It doesn’t quite help.

Around you, the milonga continues.

A few metres away, a woman seems to have an automatic embellishment setting she forgot to turn off.

Another couple flies across the floor in every possible direction.

He has a big smile.

She has one too.

You can’t quite tell if she’s enjoying herself or just trying to keep up.

Someone leads a gancho.

Their partner does a boleo.

He stops.

Now he’s explaining what she was supposed to do.

The music keeps playing.

Eventually, the tanda ends.

You sit down.

You watch the floor.

Then you notice another couple.

For some reason, they catch your attention.

They move across the floor.

The music gives them a pause.

They stop.

For a moment, neither of them moves.

They listen.

Then they move again.

In an unexpected direction.

What makes the difference?

We’ll explore that question over four Saturdays.
